The Four Seasons in the Vineyard at Sierra Vista Winery

Jun 18, 2025 | Wines

Let’s talk seasons and the cycle of grapes!

? Spring – Bud Break & Renewal
As the Sierra Foothills warm up, our vines awaken from their winter slumber. Tiny buds burst to life, signaling the start of a new vintage. Delicate green shoots emerge, and soon, flowering begins—marking a crucial step in the grape-growing process. Nature is full of hope, and so are we.

☀️ Summer – Growth & Veraison
Summer brings lush canopies and rapid vine growth. In July and August, we witness veraison—when green grapes turn purple or golden, depending on the varietal. This is when the berries begin to ripen, sugar levels increase, and flavors start to develop. It’s a beautiful transformation and a sign harvest is on the horizon.

? Fall – Harvest & Hard Work
Fall is the heartbeat of the winery. Our team hand-picks clusters at peak ripeness, usually between late August and October. The crush begins—grapes are sorted, destemmed, and fermented into wine. The vineyard begins to rest, but in the cellar, the magic is just beginning.

❄️ Winter – Dormancy & Preparation
With the vines bare, the land takes a breath. Winter pruning begins, shaping the future harvest and setting the tone for the next season. The vineyard may look quiet, but beneath the surface, roots are strengthening. It’s a time of patience, planning, and deep connection to the land.
